Care Guide: Softshell

Softshell garments from Swanndri and Line 7 are designed to strike the balance between comfort, durability, and weather protection. Built for active use and changing conditions, softshell fabrics are durable and easy to care for - if they're looked after correctly.

Because softshell jackets and vests often sit on the outside of your layering system, they usually don't need frequent washing. Spot cleaning and airing will often keep them performing well between washes.

Recommended Care

Softshell fabrics combine stretch, wind resistance, and breathability. Some styles also include a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish to help shed light rain.

Gentle care helps maintain both comfort and performance over time.

  • Spot clean and air when possible
  • Ideal for small stains, splashes, and everyday dirt
  • Cold gentle machine wash, when needed
  • Wash with similar colours and fabrics
  • Do not soak
  • Do not bleach
  • Do not use fabric softener
  • Line dry in the shade
  • Do not iron
  • Do not dry clean

These steps help protect the softshell fabric, preserve stretch and breathability, and reduce unnecessary wear.

A Note on Tumble Drying & Water Repellency

Some Line 7 softshell garments may allow low-to-medium heat tumble drying to help reactivate the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish - only if the care label inside the garment specifically allows it.

⚠️ Important:

Many Swanndri softshell garments do not recommend tumble drying, as heat can damage the fabric, trims, or construction.

Always follow the care label on your specific garment - this takes precedence over general guidance.

If tumble drying is not permitted, line drying remains the safest and most effective option.

Wash Less, Perform Better

Softshell garments benefit from being washed only when truly needed. Over-washing and heat exposure can reduce stretch, breathability, and surface treatments over time.

If your softshell jacket is damp after use, hang it to air thoroughly before storing - this simple habit can prevent odour and reduce the need for washing.

Keeping Softshell in Top Condition

  • Close all zips and fastenings before washing
  • Avoid washing with rough fabrics or heavy items
  • Remove promptly from the machine after washing
  • Store clean and completely dry

Taking care of your softshell ensures it keeps doing what it's meant to do - protecting you from the elements without compromising comfort.
